RE-CONNECTING TO TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP

I create pieces that interpret traditional craftsmanship that go back in time, yet live boldly in modern day homes. My practice reflects an inner search to connect with my South African roots and my ancestors from Eastern Europe.

MEET ADRIENNE

I stumbled upon my love for pottery while my children were attending a throwing workshop back in 20212. There was something irresistible about clay—the way it felt in my hands, its organic nature, and the intrigue of its permanence after firing. It drew me in completely.

My inspirations are deeply rooted in my upbringing in the natural environment of Southern Africa and the rich traditions of my family, particularly their Jewish heritage from Central & Eastern Europe. These influences infuse my work, adding layers of meaning and significance to what I create.

When it comes to forming my tableware, I employ a wide variety of molds. Intricate patterns come to life as I press lace, doilies, and Indian fabric stamps into the clay. Combining these patterns with my glazing techniques results in every piece being truly one-of-a-kind.

As a mother of three teenagers and someone who spends a significant amount of time in the kitchen, I find solace in the permanence that comes with firing clay. Unlike cooking or baking, where the results may vanish overnight, clay provides a lasting legacy. I cherish the ability to immortalize the memory of delicate lace, with its relatively short lifespan, by leaving its imprint in the clay—just like fossils captured in rocks.

What truly fascinates me is how the process of shaping mud has the power to connect the past, present, and future. Clay's durability amazes me, and I'm constantly in awe of its limitless possibilities. There's an inherent magic in transforming mud into objects that carry stories, bridging generations and transcending time. Clay truly holds a special place in my heart.
